In the early 1980s, Renault Assistance Course was the "mobile workshop service" for racing and rally teams. Small vans were used to transport vehicles, which were brought to the race venues on trailers. Once there, a small car camp was set up and the final touches were made to the racing cars. Because the vans were well-stocked with spare parts, accessories, tools, and other items, damage incurred during racing or rallying could be quickly repaired by the mechanics at the racetrack. The race service team worked to get the vehicle back on the road in the shortest possible time. Not only did they efficiently handle the challenges of daily work on and off the racetrack, but these mobile service stations sometimes also served as temporary accommodations for the team members. One of these vans was the Renault Estafette, based on the Citroën's front-wheel drive system, which thus offered a large, flat loading area, four independent suspensions, a sliding side door, and a three-wing rear door. It was initially produced as a delivery van with a payload of 800 kg, and from 1965 with a 1000 kg, with a flat or high roof and a short or long wheelbase. The first models used the 845 cc Dauphine engine with 32 hp, which was replaced in 1962 by the "Sierra Cléon fonte" engine of the Renault 8 with 1108 cc and 45 hp, and in 1968 by the 1289 cc engine of the Renault 12. With more than 500,000 units produced by 1980, the Estafette became a symbol of its era.
