Air Intruders, Beware!
The M247 Sgt York was an ambitious self-propelled anti-aircraft gun project which was developed in America and officially given the green light in 1981. It was envisaged for use combatting both bombers and helicopters, and had been under development since 1976. It was based upon the aging M48 Patton tank chassis and fitted with two 4km range 40mm L/70 high velocity guns on a rotating turret. The system consisted of a search radar, tracking radar, low power radar finder, IFF, signal processor, computer and microwave switching system. Eventually, due to certain difficulties, only 50 of a production lot of 618 were ever manufactured.
